Black plastic Mea Culpa

Packaging of is one of the most challenging yet most fun part of designing Aromacentric products. It’s the first interaction with a product; it needs to be beautiful to display, functional and user-friendly, and increasingly top of mind for Aromacentric, sustainable. Unfortunately Between the Sheets, in its current packaging, doesn’t pass that test, in its home base, the GTA.

After moving away from an aluminum bottle that was not reliable, I found a container that my test group loved, made from PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) black plastic.

In my research, I found that PET was non-toxic, recyclable, lightweight and would not break down from contact with essential oils and alcohol.

Earlier this year, after the packaging was decided on (tested, ordered and received), there was an influx of news about black plastic in Toronto, where Aromacentric is based. Black plastic, once the slick, modern answer to packaging design, is now like the naughty kid sent to the principal’s office. Why? Because it is undecipherable from the conveyer belt by the sorter at the recycling facility and contaminates the batch of recycling.

So even though PET is recyclable and is coded as such, black plastic needs to be thrown in the garbage. As we all know, the last thing the world needs is more plastic bottles in the garbage and in our oceans.

Should I be throwing out unused black plastic bottles? No, I think that’s worse. As we come to the end of our supply of black plastic bottles, and as we test new more sustainable packaging, the current bottles need to be used up and then reused. They have a ton of life in them after you enjoy Between the Sheets.

Here’s just a few of the things you can do with that black plastic spray bottle after you enjoy Between the Sheets:

  • wash thoroughly with hot soapy water, rinse well
  • spray clean water to remove any of product in the sprayer tube
  • remove the label by soaking the clean bottle then peeling it off

Then…you can use this spray bottle in so many different ways including;

  • house plant mister – air plants for example LOVE to be misted
  • all purpose cleaner with vinegar and water which is GREAT for glass
  • produce rinse - 1 part vinegar: 3 parts water
  • fill with cooking oil of your choice and mist onto cookie sheets and pans
  • arts and crafts projects

For now, enjoy Between the Sheets and your reusable spray bottle and please come back and see our new packaging in early 2019.

If you have any questions at all, please get in touch!

All the best,

Carol-Ann
